Tasmania: community gardens in the press
Story by Russ Grayson, November 2023. Photo: The Sorell Times.
If we ever wanted evidence that community gardens are now fixtures in our urban landscapes, this reader-contributed photo in The Sorell Times, a local newspaper covering the region just east of Hobart, is it.
The photo is of Bicheno Community Garden. Bicheno, on lutruwita-Tasmania’s east coast, is a popular holiday and surfing venue. That there is a community garden in the town demonstrates just how deeply the practice of community gardening has penetrated Australia’s towns and cities.
Bicheno Community Garden, 67-69 Burgess Street, Bicheno, Tasmania, is one of a growing number that have appeared in Tasmania these past ten years.

I love people who do Community Gardens or spaces to share. I am a senior gardener and artist looking to move in June 2025 to Biceno or Swansea?? Not sure
I grow a tropical gardener up here, but might invest in a veggie pod or green house structure when I come to Tassie.
Keep up the great work! Cheers in growing. Chrissy
