At Community Garden 3231 we grow food, friendships and community. Members grow food in communal and individual plots. We come together for working bees where we work together, learn from each other and share the organic produce we have grown.  The garden is a learning centre for people wishing to become more self sufficient by growing their own fruit and vegetables.  We practice and share knowledge about making compost, soil preparation, saving seeds and propagating your own seedlings, seasonal planting, organically controlling garden pests and the related areas of making compost bins and raised garden beds.

There are common garden beds or community garden beds that grow crops of vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes and garlic.  When it’s time to harvest, produce is distributed to members.  Private plots are also available to rent for those wishing to grow vegetables for their own use. We have raised garden beds for people who cannot bend down to garden. Other beds have seats to allow for easy gardening without needing to kneel.

A major purpose of the garden is to provide a place where people meet and connect with each other.  We are constantly amazed at the strong sense of community developed at the garden by working together on a common goal.  There is something for everyone to do whether it is weeding, digging, making a garden plot, building a shed or just making sure that newcomers feel welcome.  In doing this we are growing both a garden and our community. Plus we have many social activities where we share food and friendships.

Community Garden 3231 was officially opened in May 2010 on Surf Coast Shire land and since then it has provided an abundance of organic locally-grown food.  We became an incorporated body ‘Community Garden 3231 Inc.’ late 2019.
