The Oaks Estate garden was started in the early 1990s and is located on the corner of Railway & River Streets, adjoining Gillespie Park. The soil is well-drained and fairly sandy requiring mulch (and more mulch!), however this makes for light work when digging.
Oaks Estate is one of the oldest settled parts of the ACT. ‘The Oaks’ is a heritage-listed property dating back to the 1830s and is located a short distance from the garden. The story of how a (very small) part of Queanbeyan township was sliced off when the ACT was established is another and later chapter of its interesting history.
