The Fitzroy Community Garden was opened in the late 1980’s and was developed around an existing landscaped seating area.
The garden has since grown considerably and was completely refurbished in 2008. The pizza oven, food preparation area and shelter make it ideal for large gatherings.
During 2012-13 we worked in partnership with residents and local estate workers from the Department of Human Services to build a new indoor kitchen facility adjacent to the garden.
The community kitchen is available for community gardeners and the broader community for food related events and celebrations. In 2015 Fitzroy Garden won the award for Best Community Garden in the North from Vic In Bloom.
With every spare inch under intensive cultivation, the community garden is an impressive example of organic urban agriculture and grassroots community empowerment. Each individual garden plot is unique, reflecting the diversity of garden members who hail from across the globe; including Southeast Asia, the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
