Kumangka Community Garden “the Garden” is an emerging, self-funded, accessible and inclusive community garden located on the Minda Inc. precinct in North Brighton. Membership provides an exciting and unique opportunity to be involved in developing, and benefitting from, a garden for the local community within the Minda footprint. The Garden is governed by the Kumangka Community Garden Committee and is financially and operationally independent of Minda Inc., who have leased us the site.

We’re not a regular allotment garden. Every decision and action in the Garden is made with a conscious effort to be fully inclusive and to nurture our community and our environment. When we act, we do so with purpose, and are guided by these principles: sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, community, education and innovation.

Open Wednesday 9:00am – 11:30am and Saturday morning by arrangement. The Garden is located in the southeast section of the Minda Inc. North Brighton site. Vehicle access is via the Southern Driveway (off King George Ave), turn right onto Fassina Way and first left onto Bright Way. There is a car park adjacent to the Garden.

The garden is located on the Minda Inc. North Brighton precinct, but the Kumangka Community Garden is governed by a committee of local residents and is operationally and financially independent of Minda Inc.

What does Kumangka mean?

‘Kumangka’ is the Kuarna word for together – Kumangka Community Garden is a place of inclusion and togetherness.

Is the garden accessible for people with physical disability?

Accessibility is the primary consideration of the garden’s planning and design. Currently, over 50% of the garden space is suitable for people with limited mobility and is wheelchair friendly.

Children under 16 are welcome to accompany adult members to the garden. The adult member is responsible for supervising any children in their care in the garden and on the Minda Inc. site.

What happens to the garden produce?

Our members share the harvest at the end of each garden working bee. Any excess is sold at the Minda Inc. cafe to raise money for the garden.

Are there any individual garden beds available to hire?

We do not have individual plots to hire. The ethos of our garden is to participate together as a community, sharing the work and the harvests.

Are dogs allowed in the garden?

Dogs on leads and under their owner’s control are welcome in the garden. There are no rubbish bins in the garden, so owners are kindly requested to remove their dog’s waste from the site.

Are there specific times for gardening?

Currently, we meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:00am – 11:30am. More sessions may be added as the garden membership expands. The garden is also accessible by a key code for watering or maintenance at other times.

Are there toilet facilities?

Toilets are located at the Inc Café (open Monday – Friday 8:00am – 3:00pm), a short walk from the garden. On the weekend, the closest public toilets are located outside the surf club at the junction of The Esplanade and Repton Road, North Brighton.
