Feeding Australia – community gardens and local food security

As the peak body for community gardens across Australia, CGA is a tireless advocate for the important roles that community gardens play in people’s lives.

The Australian Government is currently developing a national food security strategy and recently called for submissions to a discussion paper, ahead of a consultation phase in 2026.

Feeding Australia: A National Food Security Strategy is being developed with farmers and fishers, industry and the community. It aims to boost the productivity, resilience and security of our food system.

In our submission to the discussion paper, we made these key points:

  • CGA represents a vibrant, active and growing community gardening community that has a role to play in improving local food security and enhancing social cohesion.
  • Community gardens are proven, cost-effective infrastructure for building resilient, healthy, and food-secure communities.
  • With appropriate government recognition and support, CGA can help to rapidly scale impact, ensuring every Australian—urban, regional, and remote—has access to nourishing, locally grown food and connected community spaces.

CGA’s vision is of connected, nourishing, accessible and resilient community gardens for all Australians and we look forward to being part of the conversation next year as the strategy is further developed.
