St Helen’s Community Garden

Welcome to St Helen's Community Garden where garden members (St Helen's Gardeners) work together to grow herbs and vegetables in communal plots and share the produce.  Our garden started with a meeting in May 2012.

We are an organic garden and use tank water. As well as 18 raised beds we have made 8 tubs and one bed into wicking beds to save water. We have 15 compost bins, 10 worm farms and 4 worm towers. We have own native stingless beehive and two “bee motels” to provide nesting for native bees and insects. We try and grow our plants from organic seeds and select heritage varieties where possible.

We save seeds whenever possible. Twenty to thirty members meet every Sunday when we harvest from the garden and share what we collect. The garden bed closest to the Library is planted with herbs, salad greens and flowers that are either edible or are companion plants for our vegetables.  We encourage passers-by to pick from this bed. We have informative plant labels to educate visitors.
