The little red fruit on the ground were the giveaway. Reddish and around a centimetre in diameter, they suggested something was happening above. Looking up, there it was. The tree was coming into fruit, its […]

Russ Grayson – media liaison wrote a new post, COMMUNITY GARDENS: council concerns, on the site ACFCGN 4 months, 1 week ago
It seems a simple thing for councils to do. Handing over an area of public land for people to turn into a community garden.
Like many things so seemingly simple, it turns out to be more complicated. This is […]

Russ Grayson – media liaison wrote a new post, An interview about footpath gardens raises questions, on the site ACFCGN 1 year ago
I NEVER planned to get involved in the politics of growing food on footpaths.
It was an imaginative idea, I thought, when it started to attract a greater number of practitioners almost a decade ago. Quickly I […]

Great article Russ. I have planted smaller Lilly Pillies to create a protective hedge around my Mango. I think because of their texture and mild flavour they will make a great filler in bushtucker recipes for sauces and chutneys. They will be top pruned to about 6-8 feet high (only about 1 meter so far) so all fruit can be picked from standing on the ground. They are on the edge of the bush tucker and native outer zone of our SUN garden. Our first plantings were wattle seedlings as they are leguminous pioneer species in Aussie forest systems. We have added about half a dozen bushtucker plants this year as the wattles start to grow and provide shelter. We top prune the wattles also as I think it stops them getting straggly and helps them live longer, as well as making better wind breaks. I think we have our first Lilly Pillys forming on trees I planted a couple of years ago – pretty quick..
