I read this on 'The Conversation' website today: So what is the role of planning? While we cannot blame planners for causing all these issues, they do have the ability to intervene and thus a role to play in improving urban life. Design guidelines, for example, can help by ensuring people have more accidental social encounters in spaces like cafes, at mailboxes or in gardens. So too can more strategic interventions such as community gardens – places where people grow not only food, but also friendships. More green space can also potentially buffer noise, heat and light, and provide respite from crowds.' (http://theconversation.com/planners-know-depressingly-little-about-a-citys-impacts-on-our-mental-health-81098?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=twitterbutton) As our inner cities become more crammed with people living in apartments with no gardens the demand for community gardens is going to soar, no doubt about it.

Hi everyone. Well....we have taken the first tentative steps in starting our community garden. We are in negotiations with another local club to establish the community garden. Talks have been happening with the local shire council officers and we have lots of enthusiasm and commitment to the project. Any suggestions on what steps we need to ensure at this early stage? Cheers. Diana

Well we're getting into the ground, rather than off it. We're canvassing views and opinions from throughout the Mundoolun Estate. While we began with a "community vegetable garden" at the front of many peoples minds and native and parklands developments down the track we're now moving that to the front of mind considerations. We're developing a concept design for a grand plan to be achieved collaboratively with the local council around the four "lakes" and new community hall. The community garden group will be allocated some land close to the center, but people's visions are far broader... longer... wider... actually about 20ha all together. Long term we can make this happen.
