The celebration of the Winter Solstice is rooted in ancient cultures, with humans observing this seasonal milestone throughout history, having created spiritual and cultural traditions to celebrate the rebirth of sunlight after the darkest period of the year.
At Northey Street City Farm, we have been celebrating the Winter Solstice for over 20 years with an annual festival for the local community with live music, dancing, workshops and talks for all ages, yummy food, ceremony, a lantern parade and of course our mesmerising bonfire.
Our main stage hosts live music from chilled folk to tribal dancing beats! And this year we are stoked to have OKA, Murray Kyle, Linsey Pollack and Spankinhide on our stage, along with other great local acts.
Throughout the afternoon, sustainable living educational talks and workshops for adults, plus workshops and activities for teens and kids, will be on offer again, with a broad array of topics being covered. And our Solstice Ceremony, Lantern Parade and Bonfire will start soon after sunset, so the kids can join in the fun before they're too tired.
This year we are planning to showcase a Zero Waste event! This is exciting and also a little challenging because our food and drink stalls won’t be using any single use items. So to help us achieve this goal, please bring your own water bottle / coffee cup / plate / bowl / cutlery and if you forget or you’re travelling light there will be crockery available to hire for a gold coin fee. We will also have some awesome sustainable products available for purchase if you want to buy your kit for the next Waste Free Festival!
There really will be something for everybody at this great annual family event.View the program
