Earlier this year the members of the Halcro Street Community Garden put out a call out for local schools and gardening groups to assist with a project about researching the best plants to grow on the Fraser Coast in our weather conditions. The idea was to gather this information from growing particular produce from seeds and once the results were collated this information would be collated in to a resource for local residents. A small number of responses were received and the groups were provided with seeds and a format to follow to gather their findings.
The Sandy Straits School took on the project with a load of enthusiasm gathering data for the project while managing to grow interest amongst their students with around 20 students now participating during their lunch breaks. Mid stream they were provided with lettuce seedlings which were donated to the community garden by a local resident and the students grew these which allowed them to donate most of them to We Care 2 for their community based food programs.
It seems that the Pay Forward concept is alive and happening as the Community Garden is gaining data for their original project, the school is growing knowledge, interest and experience in their students and local charities such as We Care 2 and The Comfort Kitchen were able to receive donations for their community based programs.
The Community Garden is hoping to continue their connections with other local groups in 2018 so if you would like to get involved or to find out more give us a call on 4194 2441.Recommend0 recommendationsPublished in
