2015 Sydney MeetUP — Camden CG
Story and photos by Russ Grayson, July 2015
IT HAS BEEN 20 years since the creation of the Australian City Farms & Community Gardens Network, and in that time community food gardens have germinated in our towns and cities like bean seeds sprouting in fertile soil.
When the first inventory of community gardens was published by the Network in 1996 there were just 37 listed. This year, the Network’s online map of community gardens and city farms listed close to 600. And that is considered far from a full count.
So it was good to visit one of the more recent arrivals in July this year when the seasonal, Sydney Region Community Garden Network, a subset of the national Network, gathered at Camden Community Garden on Sydney’s south west rural fringe. There, the competent Camden garden team hosted an event notable for its conviviality, good talk and good, tasty and shared food in an environment of green fields and open countryside.

The Network’s next gathering is in Spring, at Pittwater Community Garden on the city’s northside.
