Mullumbimby Community Garden gets into community education — seriously

Growing sustainability @ Mullumbimby Community Garden

On Monday 19 July, the Mullumbimby Community Garden will launch an
exciting new program of courses in organic local food production and
permaculture. Growing Sustainability @ The Garden will be delivered in
partnership with the Byron Region Community College. The courses take
place at The Garden, while the College will take bookings for most courses.

Local media outlets and special guests will attend the the launch from
10am at the Community Garden for morning tea, photo opportunities and to
meet the tutors. The Garden is located on the southern end of Stuart St,
past the Museum, next to the tennis courts.

“The Growing Sustainability Spring Program offers participants practical
workshops in permaculture, seed saving, moon-planting and gardening for
the whole family, to name a few,” said Andrew Carter, coordinator of
education at The Garden.

“With the spring season approaching it’s a great time learn how to make
your garden productive and healthy. In our courses, friendly and
experienced tutors share their skills of growing abundant, fresh produce.”

The program features a Certificate III in Permaculture, a 12 month
nationally accredited qualification in the permaculture design and
implementation. Students learn to develop productive gardens, farms and
communities that meet human needs while working in harmony with nature.

In October, renowned international local food security activist, Robina
McCurdy will also deliver the Growing Gardeners weekend workshop in
national organics week for people interested in being
garden/permaculture educators.

“The Mullumbimby Community Garden is developing quickly into a beautiful
and productive learning centre. Coupled with Byron Region Community
College’s commitment to providing a wide range of opportunties to
develop sustainability skills, these courses will provide motivation,
inspiration and skills to make the shift towards sustainable local food
production,” says Katrina Shields, Sustainability Coordinator at Byron
Region Community College.
